Student Life at Colgate University
Colgate University is located in Hamilton, N.Y., a small town with a population about equal to the size of the student body. Colgate’s Outdoor Education Program offers a number of outdoor opportunities, and students can also join any of the other religious, service, special interest, or student government clubs. Greek life plays a significant role in student life, representing nearly half of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students are required to live on campus—which includes Greek houses and university apartments—for their first three years. The Colgate Raiders compete in the NCAA Division I Patriot League and are known for their rivalry with the Cornell University Big Red. Colgate’s Seven Oaks Golf Course is ranked among the top five college courses in the country by Golf Digest.

Mission (as provided by the school)
Colgate University is a highly selective, residential, liberal arts college for students with diverse backgrounds and talents who are preparing for lives of leadership and productive citizenship. Colgate is a community of leaders and doers. Whether in fields of academic distinction, off-campus study programs, student activities program, or the success and tradition of our Division I varsity athletics, Colgate students think big and succeed on the highest level. Because of the school's highly personalized setting, individual contribution is essential; every voice makes a difference. Students have many options to tailor their own academic program in a curriculum with 51 majors that emphasize interdisciplinary study and critical thinking. Faculty expertise and a commitment to undergraduates mean Colgate excels in preparing students for a wide range of careers in evolving professions, graduate and professional school, and civic leadership. One distinct advantage that Colgate holds over larger universities is that faculty, rather than graduate students, teach all courses. When it comes to research, the advantage becomes even more pronounced, as faculty in all departments and programs closely engage students in research projects -- sometimes as early as their first year. By the time they are seniors, it is not unusual for motivated students to have presented work at conferences or even to have co-authored papers in academic journals. Service-learning centered around the upstate New York region is also a hallmark of a Colgate education, providing opportunities for students to engage in a broad range of philanthropic activities that tackle public issues and test their knowledge in real world settings. The experience beyond the classroom transforms students, fostering an awareness and appreciation for something larger than themselves. The volunteer engagement of town and gown contribute to a level of activity and quality of life that sets the area apart. In addition, Colgate is a national leader in off-campus study programs, offering more than 20 semester-long programs led by members of the Colgate faculty all over the world, from London to Kyoto, from Venice to Wollongong, from Beijing to Port of Spain. The university sends its own faculty on study groups to teach, mentor, and help students explore. Domestic programs also offer opportunities for a semester of study off campus. Colgate's campus is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the nation, and its location in the village of Hamilton in Central New York is a distinguishing feature. Students love the location for its accessibility to outdoor activities. Colgate's Outdoor Education program provides students a chance to explore the natural world while learning about themselves. Whether it is winter camping in the nearby Adirondacks, learning to kayak in nearby Lake Moraine, cross-country and downhill skiing, or learning basic wilderness survival skills, there is something for everyone. Students also bring their passion and enthusiasm to more than 100 extracurricular clubs and activities. Colgate has an extremely active culture, with clubs for just about every possible interest, including politics, media, religion, sustainability, and entertainment and arts. Students' connections with the campus community continue long after graduation. They become extraordinarily devoted alumni, contributing significantly to career networking and exploration programs on and off campus. Every year, alumni play a crucial role in helping students transition from campus life to the working world.
